If you can manage to get through the opening 10 seconds of this video, which looks like a How To video for all the terrible transitions that come with iMovie, I think you may like it.  It’s a simple man on the street style piece, asking the people of Durban their thoughts on the fact that the world is about to descend upon them. More than anything, I think it makes the people of South Africa look friendly as hell.  I hope the world returns the favor.

My favorite line?  “We like fun people”

Now that the 2010 World Cup draw has taken place, it is time for the competing nations to release ads promoting their squads. I absolutely love this sort of nationalistic football propaganda and look forward to each nation’s ad campaign.

It seems the Dutch are setting the mark with an ad titled “The Dutch Strike First,” which was released on the day of the draw. For the ad, Nike performed an overnight ‘tape attack’ to “rise the orange feeling.” Under the tag-line ‘The Dutch strike first,’ a group used approximately 6,000 yards of tape to create a huge tournament bracket on the square in the heart of the Amsterdam. The path of the Dutch team is colored orange, all the way from the group stage to the cup. To ‘reserve’ the World Cup for Holland, they wrote ‘bezet’ next to the scheme, which means ‘occupied’, or ‘taken’.

The BBC recently ran an Inside Out feature on one man that is taking the time to try and make a difference when he goes down to South Africa next summer.  His name is Jon Burns and he has started Lions Raw.  He hopes to take a small army of English volunteers out into the streets of South Africa and help with HIV awareness and perhaps the suffering of the street children affected by it.

BBC Special: Lions Raw

Just in time for last minute holiday shopping, American Outlaws, Sam’s Army, and Little Feet have teamed up for a supporter’s shirt for South Africa.

From The American Outlaws site:

One soccer ball will be donated for every T-shrit sold; balls will be donated to children through various villages and organizations, to be determined following the World Cup draw on December 4th.

It comes in Red and Gray apparently… but why would you not just get red? Whatever. I will be picking up one soon myself.

Now a bit of shameless self promotion. If you are in the Boston area next Friday you should come to American Outlaws: Boston’s Winter Ball. A semi-formal with all proceeds going to charity. Click here to buy tickets and for more info.
