Is it April 27 yet? For the love of Tony Meola’s ponytail this day needs to come soon. According to the folks at Amazon that is the release date for the 2010 FIFA World Cup video game.
The international game has always been my favorite part of soccer. Since the USMNT dawned those infamous denim shirts back in ‘94 I’ve loved the passion of the World Cup. The FIFA World Cup series has been my favorite game consistently. It may not have the creation zone bells and whistles that the yearly FIFA series offers but I’m hoping that will change this year. Though the game play hasn’t always been as good as the yearly series (it usually feels like the game is rushed), I love having the option to try and qualify out of UEFA with the Faroe Islands. Thanks to the major upgrades across the board in online play since 2006 I’m also really excited to take the US side onto the virtual pitch against the world (for the record – I’m about as successful in online play as the United States has been in World Cup games played in Europe).

Let’s hope they don’t screw this game up. FIFA 10 was amazing and I’m hoping they use some momentum from the success of that game and bring it to World Cup series. I’d like to see them try and capture the atmosphere and presentation of international matches. I’m hopeful for this since that was a major part of Electronic Arts revamping of Madden 10 this past year. The feel of international soccer is like nothing else on Earth, when I’m immersed in a blue television screen glow at 3:45 in the morning I’d like my vuvuzelas blasting, my strikers scoring, and fingers sore from playing an entire CONCACAF qualifying schedule.
Another wish list item would be bringing back the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra music, like EA had for the 2002 FIFA World Cup game. They’ll never do it again – but the music definitely captured the intensity of the world stage.
Spring can’t come fast enough now.
